Many of the small business owners and solopreneurs I’ve taught this year were literally floundering and not knowing what to do next, or the order in which to do it.
Some have really been struggling financially, even though they are very talented at their core skills.
Clearly, something has to be done. And I feel so strongly about this dilemma for small business owners and solopreneurs, I’m taking on the challenge with this one. Because as you know, that’s my style ... and because it’s so urgently needed in the business world today.
Don’t worry, there is a solution — and I’m going to give it to you today.
After all, the days of “easy money, easy credit” and “throwing anything out there and see what sticks” are long gone, along with the old model of “customers come easy.”
The past three years have shown us that the way the world does business has changed forever. In the process, it’s actually created a much more educated, much more aware, much more capable consumer. Like never before, customers ask questions, do their own research … and can dig up far more accessible information and background, checking into the history and reputation of any person and company they choose to.
I’ll bet you do exactly the same thing, too. After all, everybody does — you, me, and every one of your current and potential customers (thank you, internet!). Simply because we HAVE to, if we want to stay ahead … and keep things real.
That means your prospects are actually better customers, because now you BOTH know the value you’re bringing to them with your business. But they’re also much harder to reach and convince, and to nail down a commitment. The enormous glut of misguided information they’ve been fed over the past decade has brought them … and you … down so many blind paths to nowhere. And I’m guessing that’s probably depleted your finances at the same time.
You see, not all business information is created equal. Neither are all business coaches, for that matter. Although many can and do give good advice, there are an awful lot of so-called “business gurus” you may have heard from who are discovering that the short-term, incomplete, surface-level models they’ve been promoting are now causing their own financial crisis.
The trouble is, most of these individuals will never admit it; instead, they’ll keep up appearances as if everything is hunky-dory and covered in a glittering layer of gold.
Actually, maybe it isn’t their fault either, so don’t be too hard on them. They were doing what they thought was right with an “easy credit, easy business” model.
Sadly, they weren’t looking at (or accepting) the bigger picture — possibly because they haven’t successfully done business through two major recession periods, as I have during the mid-80s and again today. (Okay, I suspect there are a few unscrupulous operators out there who won’t be around much longer. Real life has a way of coming around to bite them right back.)
You see, what worked so well in the first three-quarters of the past decade was running in a bubble — a world where nobody cared too much about notching up 1000s and 1000s of dollars of debt on little pieces of plastic.
And more often than not, it appears that many of the “biz gurus” who wore their “wealth” in your face are struggling now, too. Because their “wealth” wasn’t actually real for a lot of them. Their trappings, the first class travel, hotel suites, fast cars, designer clothes, limos, and exotic holidays — all showcased to entice you with their “you can have this lifestyle, too!” spiel — were most likely bought on melting plastic.
This whole situation reminds me so much of the Wall Street bankers and their “easy come, easy go” attitude — and look where that has brought the whole world!
A little late to the table, the “plastic gurus” have discovered that their followers aren’t willing to shell out hundreds and thousands of dollars for rehashed fluff ... incomplete, untested theories ... and half-baked plans that do precious little beyond making you feel good for a moment or two. I’m sure you’ve experienced how the “we can do anything” group-hug euphoria from a large gathering soon dies away, to leave you slogging your guts out trying to eke out a living with a struggling business.
That’s when you face the reality that, while you may have absorbed a lot of knowledge — maybe even too much knowledge that isn’t right for your business — very little of it actually creates money here and now.
You know you can make yourself flat out busy 24/7 in business doing the wrong things.
In fact, for most of us, that’s when reality slaps you across BOTH cheeks. Sadly, the heart-wrenching truth is most people beat themselves up at this point, thinking “why can’t I make it work?” They would be far better served to peel back the layers to expose the business model they are using … and discover that the targets you’re chasing and the methods you’re using are not where the money’s hiding in the first place!
When you get right down to it, understanding how to make REAL money is what it’s about. Cash is king. Genuine business influencers, coaches, and consultants GET this.
As the recession of the ’80s was in full swing, I made my first millions … while I was still in my early 20s. During that difficult time I had to learn how to build REAL businesses and generate REAL cash, because that was the only way I could succeed on my own terms.
Since then, I’ve created several companies in various industries, and transformed into a serial entrepreneur by making millions of dollars again and again, hundreds of times over. I’ve learned the secrets — and the incredible value — of generating sustainable, cash-producing businesses both off-line and on-line in several countries around the world.
Face it, you can’t call yourself truly wealthy until you have money lining your bank account. Having 15 credit cards, a car loan, a boat lease, and a house that you’ve re-mortgaged three times over doesn’t quite cut it.
That’s why, when you look behind the curtain, you’ll discover how many “rich” business gurus are in actuality just dream-weavers ... fantasy peddlers with huge monthly-minimum payments to meet!
Especially now, as prominent economists — including Nouriel Roubini, renowned for predicting the 2008 financial crisis — aren’t prepared to let up on their warnings of a potential double-dip recession in the coming year. Even if that doesn’t come to pass as they’ve predicted, the global economy is slowing down, and slow global growth typically persists for years when a recession arises from a financial crisis.
Now I’m not an economist, I’m a woman in business. And regardless of what the money marketeers and politicians decide to call it, what’s happening today in the global economy isn’t something to be terrified about. I’m not saying it doesn’t concern me and you ... of course it does. But the only way we’ll thrive our way through it is by observing and responding to the conditions at hand, not by pretending they don’t exist.
As you’ve seen, you can do a lot of the right things ... and do a lot of things right, too. You may have the nice website — and a great idea for a promotion, a newspaper ad, or what used to be a “killer offer.” In fact, you probably followed most of your previous business guidance word for word up to now.
But that’s no guarantee of success today, is it?
Even worse, if you’re unwittingly doing a lot of the WRONG things, that you don’t even know are wrong, well ... where’s that going to get you?
What if the business model you’re working with needs more than just “tweaking”? What if it actually needs to be re-engineered for today ... for today’s customers ... for today’s economic conditions and financial realities? Don’t just give it a glossy makeover when you should really detonate it and start fresh!
At the same time, your venture has to meet your own changing needs, as you strive to offer the top-quality services you want to be widely known for in today’s business reality.
Because I’ll let you in on a secret … there’s still plenty of money out there.
It didn’t just dry up and blow away, you know. It’s just that the people you’ve gotten used to dealing with — the ones who were buying up all they could find in the old “carefree days” — aren’t spending quite so freely anymore. Simply put, they couldn’t afford to even if they wanted to.
If you’ve watched the news in the past year or three, you already know why that’s true.
Obviously, none of the banks you and I deal with today are willing to dish out loans just because you’ve got room on your line of credit or a home re-mortgage. Which leaves those former “prospects” hoping to “invest in themselves” on somebody else’s dime standing with a purse full of ready-to-fill credit cards ... fondly remembering the old days like a dog-eared chapter of Harlequin romance-novel fiction.
So it’s up to you to find the people who ARE cashed up. To position your business with the right messaging for THEM, and offer them exactly what THEY need to improve or solve their business and life issues instead.
